We do our best to take care of the land that grows our crops and provides for our livelihood.
Over 30 years ago we adopted zero tillage practices to help combat soil erosion, loss of top soil, assist with weed management, grow organic matter and save fuel and soil compaction by only going over the land once to seed in the spring of the year. It took us quite a few years to “perfect it” and feel comfortable with stubble (last year’s crop) covering the land and seeding our new crop into those conditions. Fast forward 30 years and we continue to learn but we feel we have built soil health, controlled soil erosion, saved fuel etc. But there is still more that we can do. If you take care of the land it will take care of you.
In our part of the world our topsoil is only about 6-10 inches deep so it is important to protect it.
Not all land is created equal.
37% of the land that we manage is not arable. This land has an important job to do and here are some of the attributes.
- Trees and native land are a carbon sink and water filtration system
- Diverse wildlife habitat for moose, elk, deer, bear, coyote and wolves, birds of prey as well as wild flowers
- soil and water retention for erosion control. building biodiversity and enhancing the work of Mother Nature
